“émotions voilées” - “veiled emotions”
Exhibit of paintings: July 9 - August 9, 2009 Vernissage / Opening reception:
July 9, Thursday, 6 – 9 PM
COLLIOURE, L’ANCIENNE MARIE
American artist Laleña L. VANN will be exhibiting her paintings for the first time in Collioure, at the Ancienne Marie, on
July 9 - August 9, 2009. She has been exhibiting her work in California for the last 30 years, and currently lives part-time in Collioure, southern France. She will exhibit 22 paintings in acrylic or oil, on canvas, in sizes ranging from 80 x 80 cm to 30 x30 cm.
Although her work looks like an abstract painting with a rich surface texture, each painting is composed of 12 – 20 layers of painted written words. After each layer is painted, and dried, she turns the canvas a quarter turn, and paints the next layer. The final effect looks like woven fabric, or a subtle matrix.
Reflecting her fascination with language, communication, and personal growth, each one tells a different story, with titles such as “Au Revoir Tristesse”, “Beyond the Blues”, “Our Astonishing Galaxy”, and “When I was Young”. They are written in French, but can not be read, thus the exhibit title: “émotions voilées” (“veiled emotions” in English).
